Well, once we decide on the themes (I'll work on up to 2 at a time) I'll do the mods.. I downloaded the ones we had plus some extras... So now it's just a matter of doing them.. Right now we're re-doing a site for a Houston convention... Requires some programming as well as the HTML...

Holy shit...

Unread postby Shrink908 » Sun Oct 19, 2008 9:59 pm

Well, the unexpected happened.. I came home from being out and found the server locked up... So I tried to reboot and it failed. Finally found the cause is that NEW (BRAND NEW) 1TB drive that was donated to us FAILED and it arrived to me New In Box from Tiger Direct only 3 months ago. So we lost all the HTML/PHP files associated with EVERY web site we host.. However, as I'm smarter due to the last disaster we had I stored the SQL data on a different drive, so I stuck a new copy of PHPBB3 under the data and it works.. It's ugly, yes, but it works and no posts were lost. We'll get the themes and such changed as soon as we can. The bad news is I think we did end up losing the banner ads that had been designed for the site and any pictures people had uploaded directly to the site.. However, this is a far lesser loss than having lost all your posts. I do have a >2nd< recent back up of the posting data, though, so even if this drive had gone too we'd still be good on that front. Please be patient while we get things back to normal.

Thank god for backups.

As it stands, Shrink, I'm amazed that you've still got us up and running--with no loss, no less. You and yours are just wonderful.
I figured it was time to change this, but...there's really nothing to change it to.

I've got to agree with everyone else on this. Shrink, you deserve to have your praise sung from the heavens.

I don't mind the color change so long as the posts are still here. Though I do hope you can get the green back sometime soon.

Agreed. This is nothing compared to last time. Just gotta be patient and wait for things to come back. ^_^

Well, I mourn the quick reply box. :P But that's cuz I'm a lazy SOB.

Yes, kudos for the miraculous turnaround.

Effing A, that drive died fast as all hell. Under warranty then, I assume?

Techincal Question:
If the drive that failed had been on a RAID1 mirrored array, there theoretically would have been zero data loss, correct?

What would be the noticeable user-end impact of such an array between two 1TB drives?

Non-Technical Question:
It's been a minute since I can recall making a donation. If you would like, O Keeper of the Server, when the failed drive is replaced, I could chip in enough to get a second drive, for the purposes of building said array.

You know, assuming that is what you'd want to do. My un-tech-savvy ass doesn't see a problem with that setup, but seeing as how I'm not the one putting it together and maintaining it...

Tell you what. You guys let me know, and if you think it would be a good thing, I'll do it.

I figured it was just the net that went down. Glad you were able to recover from the Catastrophic failure so fast.

Wow, I'm just glad you're on the ball, and my condolences on the code trolling that you're looking at. Kudos for getting the drive back up and running as quickly as you have.

huh, mechanical drive failure after three months? Was it enterprise grade or one of those 10,000rpm drives? I heard enterprise is supposed to last significantly longer, and that the faster drives burn out more quickly, simply because of the speeds they achieve.
